But I do get a lot of free music.
I probably should have quit writing the next day and after you read the following review, you will unabashedly agree with me. I kept at it, however, and though I still haven't made any money, my writing skills have improved tremendously. That being said, they could only get better.
My first review was for Amazon.com, and I wrote about the CD "Postcards Of The Hanging" by The Grateful Dead, which is a CD dedicated to the Grateful Dead's exhaustive celebration of the Bob Dylan back catalog. You can still find it on Amazon if you search, it is their very first review of this CD I believe.
Just read on:
The Grateful Dead is probably the most famous "cover band" of all time. And the artist they covered more than any other was Bob Dylan, and this is their best work covering his songs.
Whether you are a fan or not, or a fan of Bob Dylan or not, you should enjoy this cd very much. "Desolation Row" is the best track on the disc, though "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again", "When I Paint My Masterpiece" and "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" are strong efforts. A previous reviewer recommends "Dylan and The Dead" vs. "Postcards.........", but trust me, this is a MUCH BETTER collection. Do yourself a favor and pick this up. If you are Dead fan it is a must have. If you are not, it is still a great disc to listen to and you will soon be a Dead-head afterwards.
That is it in it's entirety, word for sorry word, with no further editing, not that there was any editing to begin with, clearly. A few points must be made at this time:
1. Let's be honest, though 10 people on Amazon found this review helpful, I am sure it did not inspire any purchases. And if it did, where is my cut?
2. "Afterwards" is not a word. There is no plural for "afterward". Doh!
3. I do feel that putting the phrase "much better" into ALL CAPS totally captured my passion for this album. Or not.
4. The phrase "you should enjoy this cd very much," screams of my south side Chicago upbringing. Hey, yo, buy 'dis CD here. My God.
5. Why did I put cover band in quotes? Am I implying that they are a cover band but not really a cover band? Or that they are not a cover band but in reality they may be? I may have actually made the quotes gesture with my fingers while I was writing it. I certainly do every time I read it. God I hate when people do that.
6. In the second sentence of this review, I started with a preposition (and), and then used the same word as a conjunction. My eighth grade English teacher Miss Bakke would have slammed me against my locker for that, breaking a few ribs in the process. She was built like Ray Nitschke.
7. The first sentence of paragraph two features a number of conjunctions, except all are the word "or". Or not. Just kidding. Or not. No really - read that sentence again. Chalkboard, meet my fingernails. Yup.
8. First paragraph - floating tense. The Grateful Dead is, the artist they covered, this is their effort. I am thinking are>they>was instead of is>they>is, unless of course I am peddling hot jewelry at the local carnival.
At this point I would like to apologize to the Grateful Dead. I am sure in August, 2005 I became 100% responsible for a huge decrease in sales volume of this lovely CD, that by the way is still a treasure in my Grateful Dead musical collection.
In retrospect, however, it seems more like a Bob Weir solo effort, not much Jerry Garcia to be found anywhere on this disc, at least not vocally. But, every Sunday after I purchased it, I would be out in the driveway washing my ride with this CD blasting at top volume through my garage stereo system speakers. Ah the good old days.
I've certainly come a long way. We'll just put this one back in the time capsule and revisit it in 2015.
Thank you for your time, and have a great day.
Mike
