The Monday Mix - The Hallmark Holiday Edition

Before I talk about today's show and our musical selections I just have to get this off my chest -- a fact that caused me pause enough to do a double take upon initial discovery.

More than 9 million pet owners buy gifts for their pets for Valentine’s Day.

I'm talking animal pets, not the girl in the far cubicle who laughs at all your stupid jokes just to get a few free lunches each week. Cancel my reservations and let me check out for the day. Please? I wanted to put a BIG RED X on my calendar for February 14th, but that's the day that "Arrow" by Heartless Bastards drops. So I can't. And I won't. More on that in a minute.

True Fact #1 -- The deadliest of all holidays is St. Valentine's Day. Don't believe me? Allow me to submit to you the following Valentines Day details three:

1. Saint Valentine (in Latin, Valentinus) is the name of several (14 in all) martyred saints of ancient Rome. Martyred, as in somebody who suffers persecution and death for refusing to renounce, or accept, a belief or cause.

2. According to legend it was St. Valentine himself who sent the first valentine in the form of a letter to his jailer’s blind daughter with whom he had fallen in love. Just before he was put to death at the hands of King Claudius II for marrying the kings soldiers without the king’s permission he penned a note to his love and signed it: From your Valentine.

3. In 1929 at the height of prohibition Al Capone ordered the killing of members of a rival gang run by Bugs Moran in Chicago on Valentines Day. Authorities were unable to find any real evidence to tie Capone to the crime and he was never arrested or tried for the murder of these seven men.

Make sure you sign that Hallmark Card in your own blood.

I didn't want to sound like a total Valentine Scrooge so when I put today's playlist together I tried to include some love-centric choices. Whether or not they have the same effect as a laced arrow fired by a naked cherub is just as beauty is defined: in the eyes (or ears) of the beholder. Still, you may find theme commonality in the following selections: Whole Love by Wilco, Smile by Lily Allen, Knocked Up by Kings Of Leon (just kidding -- that was funny though), If Love Was A Train by Michelle Shocked, Soul Meets Body by Death Cab For Cutie, As Long As I Have You by The Detroit Cobras, Reason Why by Rachel Yamagata, Romance by Wild Flag, How Beautiful You Are by Lovers and Stranded In Your Love by Sharon Jones & Lee Fields, a song that probably resembles Valentines Day booty calls for a lot of us.

I also included Christmas Katie by Widespread Panic because here we are smack dab into the middle of February and some of my Mequonian neighbors still have their outside Christmas decorations lit up and displayed each night. My groundhog didn't see his shadow on February 2nd, but he did flip the bird to those nameless, shameless neighbors. That's True Fact #2.

There ought to be a law.

#Mequonian -- someone who lives in Mequon, WI. That's True Fact #3.

Hey, did you see the Grammy Awards last night? I didn't, because I knew Adele would win and win big and I had no desire to see that. But I did DVR it, I just fast-forwarded to watch only the musical performances and acceptance speeches by The Foo Fighters & The Civil Wars. And the commercials. Gotta love modern technology.

I've included songs by Grammy Award Winners Civil Wars & The Foo Fighters on today's Monday Mix. And as always -- sorry, no Adele. You'll see that it plainly says that below in the show description. I know she won six Grammy Awards. Good for her.

That being said, I want you to pay close attention to three songs in today's Monday Mix.
  • Serpents by Sharon Van Etten
  • Not Aware by The Maybenauts
  • Parted Ways by Heartless Bastards

The first two are great songs by artists you may not have heard of but ones you should genuinely check out. That's me telling you what to listen to again.

Here I am now enforcing my opinion using my raised and italicized voice: THE FIRST TWO ARE GREAT SONGS BY ARTISTS YOU MAY NOT HAVE HEARD OF BUT ONES YOU SHOULD GENUINELY CHECK OUT.

Parted Ways is the new single by Heartless Bastards off their album "Arrow" that actually drops on Valentine's Day. Oh the ironic symmetry just oozes in that statement, right?

But that's not why I mentioned it. I mentioned it because the album is my early pick for next years Grammy Award for Album Of The Year. I know, we are virtually one full calendar year away. But I am going to champion this effort until my two index fingers bleed from overuse.

And that's me admitting I am a two finger typist in my hushed, italicized voice.

In all seriousness......"Arrow" is THAT GOOD and Parted Ways is a perfect debut single. You can watch the video at the end of this post and I believe you can still get the MP3 for free -- start the process by friending the band on Facebook, get on their mailing list and then go from there.

Make sure you tell them Mike from Jivewired sent you >>>>> Heartless Bastards on Facebook

Then go to http://www.theheartlessbastards.com and order the CD (or digi-pak, whichever is your preferred format -- JUST GET IT).

ABOUT THE MONDAY MIX:

The Monday Mix airs from 12:30PM to 5:00PM CDT each Monday and is designed to help you get through that brutal after-lunch, energy-sucking span that kicks off every work week. This particular will be a mix of old, deep album cuts and new indie music with a lot of genre crossover. No Adele. Sorry.

What else does The Monday Mix do? Well, it helps you discover new indie music by combining some really great under the radar tracks with more established songs that were, once in fact, under the radar as well. The hope here is that the culture shock of discovering your next favorite band won't be so enormously imposing if we surround the new stuff with some of your old, familiar friends.

Jivewired supports independent musicians by paying royalties for airplay on Jivewired Radio. Please help us support indie artists by listening to our station and by purchasing indie music. Thank you.

The links on the radio player will give you download options if you really dig on the music and some of the songs are offered for free.
